Piggy in the Potager

Hope you are having a fun Friday and joining in on Show and Tell Friday at:
 My Romantic Home:
Many of you know I built a French potager style garden a few years ago on some unused land between the home in back of us and our home. I love my potager it is cute and functional.
I have flowers planted in the center of each plot. They are 6 x 9 feet I think . I can reach everything easily.
In the fall I put ornamental cabbages in the corners and plant a second set of cool weather crops- lettuces and radish mainly and herbs.
I found this cute piggy at Boxwoods in Atlanta and scooped him up! He can watch over my potager.

Herbs from the Potager

Pink Saturday
Join in at:
I have a small potager in the back behind the privacy fences. My husband made it for me a few years ago. My herbs are doing very well back there snoozing away with the tomatoes and eggplants. It is still a great joy to me to see the plants grow and produce veggies. Since I love all things French of course my garden would be a French one in style at least.
I love to get my pink wooden trug and go back to harvest herbs. I took these to a friend tied up and placed in a little bag.
Tea towels are so French and these two caught my eye. Both are pink and chic. I may never really use them but I will see them in the kitchen. It is important to make the everyday pretty, pink and somewhat practical. It is pink living!

From my potager

Happy Pink Saturday!
I was away and now I am back to Pink Saturday! Join Beverly at:

I harvested my first eggplant yesterday. Of course I had to carry it in my pink trug from the potager to the house. I don't really eat them. I just think they are cool ,very pretty, feel like dolphin skin and this variety has a hint of lavender on it. I love the white ones. They are hard to find around here.
So I tied a bow on it and am enjoying it in a bowl in the kitchen. I hope the plant makes a few more.

Potager update

Most of you know about my potager-- the first vegetable garden I've attempted since I was 8 years old. I planned it and planted it on unused land between our home's fences. Our neighbor kindly let me use his land . It is a two tier garden about 6 feet across by 16 feet long.

Well, I am so pleased so far. Things are sprouting and growing and looking green and leafy. I actually pulled one small radish--I couldn't wait for it to grow more -it was tiny but mighty spicy and yummy.

And as a special treat my husband told me to order a sign for the gate leading into the potager. The sign was created by the kind and talented Paula at Castles and Cottages blog:

She has so many shapes and can make anything custom. She is so creative.

So many weeks need to pass yet before I harvest any sizable amount of veggies but it is a real treat watching it all grow and anticipating the meals I will make with my own produce!! It still amazes me to plant seeds and get a real vegetable plant. Life is amazing and awe inspiring. In my own tiny way I feel more connected to nature with my own vegetables and my flowers.

Winter doldrums---still

We are having very cold weather for Georgia still and many people are just staying indoors. A lot of people don't have heavy enough coats for this weather.

The seed companies are smart. I am getting my catalogs for spring already. I think the first one came Dec 27th. It perks me up to dream of my spring garden. This spring I will be attempting a potager garden in some reclaimed space between our lots behind a fence. I will do the work and share the vegetables. The seed catalogs are fun to try and figure out how to do this. I have never done many vegetables and I want to pattern it after some potager gardens I saw in France.
Nothing as grand as the one at Villandry(above) wouldn't it be wonderful to have that much room?
It is important that I use the space wisely since it is a small space and also important for it to look pretty and have designated planting areas. I may do it raised bed style too.

So while the wind whistles and tears at my precious vines outside I sit inside dreaming of my French potager to come.
